Energy efficiency and durable design is at the forefront of today’s new construction market and masonry has always been an integral part of sustainability. Extensive use of brick as an energy efficient cladding on the Frank P. Doyle Library is an effective part of this design strategy.
The exterior four-inch clay brick veneer is attached with a Hohmann Dur-O-Wal anchor system. Since brick are laid individually, the architect has freedom to articulate radius walls and corners in the form of quoin, rather than a pure 90 degree return.
Benefits of masonry include thermal mass keeping the interior cooler in summer and warmer in winter. A 4 inch nominal brick veneer typically provides a 2 hour fire rating. These benefits explain why brick is so predominant in the campus environment.
