The Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation Building is located at the Orange Memorial Park in South San Francisco. The facility’s function is to serve cultural, recreational, celebratory, and educational activities. More importantly, this recreational building was conceived as a pavilion in a park and an icon for the community.
Natural stone is one of the most defining materials in this building’s architectural palette. The use of adhered stone veneer over concrete masonry units and the combination of red and yellow cedar creates an interesting visual and textural contrast to the simple geometric architecture of the building. The overall character exudes importance and permanence, strength and durability.
